Most visitors take only a day tour to Kintamani but it is actually a great place to explore this mountainous region. which includes some of the most magnificent scenery on the island. Luminous green rice fields cover the undulating land, and the reveredĘ Gunung Batur (1717m - 5633ft), an active volcano, dominates the landscape. The placid Lake Batur rests in a huge crater, overshadowed by Batur, and the lesser-known but higher, Gunung Abang (2152m - 7062ft). A tiny market village, Kintamani is 1500m (4921ft) above sea level. Palm-leaf (lontar) and stone inscriptions suggest that the village precedes the Majapahit empire. Many of the surrounding villages claim to be "Bali Aga" or indigenous Balinese.
