Fashion Meets Nature 8th Bali Fashion Week Returns August 24-28, 2008.
~Up 07/11/08 ~ Inspired by the Balinese axiom of "Tri Hita Kirana" that strives for balance in the relationships between God, man and nature - Bali Fashion Week 2009has adopted as its theme "Fashion Meets Nature."
Now a fixture on an increasingly busy calendar of annual events held on the Island, Bali Fashion Week will take place August 24-28, 2008, centered at the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel in South Kuta.
Organizers are placing an emphasis on nature and preserving Bali's environment echoing, global survival themes launched during the historic U.N. Conference for Climate Change held in Bali in December 2007. Accordingly, designers and purveyors of fashion have promised to present exciting new creations using natural fibers and materials demonstrating that the world of fashion can be truly "green."
For three days in late August Kuta will come alive with fashion exhibitions, fashion shows, seminars and live performances as international fashion buyers descend on the Island to meet their counterparts from IndonesiaÕs large fashion and design industry.
Fashion Week's Founder
Founded as a personal article of faith in a time of extreme economic uncertainty, Bali Fashion Week is the creation of Indonesian fashion icon Mardiana Ika. A recognized leader in both World and Indonesian fashion circles, Ika has taken her simple idea of creating a larger market place for Indonesian fashion and turned it into an important event on Asia's fashion calendar. Those who travel to Bali can witness first-hand the "cutting edge" talent to be found in Indonesia's fashion industry during the Fashion Week will at the same time be introduced to the rich traditional textile tradition of Indonesia: batik, songket, ikat and sarongs.

More Video Surveillance Planned for Kuta 75 New CCTV Security Cameras to Provide Better Security for Visitors and Residents in Kuta.
~Up 07/02/08 ~ A South Korean survey team is expected to visit Kuta in the first half of July to undertake a final survey for the installation of 75 CCTV surveillance points in Kuta. The team's visit was recently confirmed to the Regent of Badung by Suhandi, a Director of Rekacipta Teknologi.
The CCTV project is being undertaken on behalf of the National Police Headquarters with funding provided via export credits. The only remaining obstacle for the formal commencement of the project is a final signature of approval from the Indonesian Finance Department.
Project Cost: US$13 Million
"The CCTV products and supporting elements originate from Korea, with the total funds reaching US$13 million, covering 4 major cities in Indonesia, one of which is Bali," explained Suhandi. He added if the process is completed later this month, the contract will be commenced and final surveys, permits and site preparation can be undertaken in anticipation of the arrival of the control room and securing the permits for antennas.
"Our target is that if the appointment is finalized in July, installation can begin in September with the work to be completed and the CCTV operational in January (2009)," said Suhandi in comments made to NusaBali.

~Up 05/28/08~The National News Agency Antara reports that Bali will play host to the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) scheduled to be held August 9-13, 2009.
Representing the meeting's organizing committee, Professor Zubairi Djoerban told the press: "The congress will take place under the auspices of the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific. About 500 delegates from 50 countries are expected to take part in the congress,"
The theme adopted for the Bali conference is: "Empowering the People, Reinforcing Networks." The theme aims to enhance cooperation in the 20 year struggle to eradicate AIDS. "We hope participants from Asia and the Pacific will share experience, particularly those who are policy makers," Zubairi said,

Down and Dirty in Bali Balinese Mud Wrestling 'Mepantigan' Tournament August 15-17, 2008.
~Up 05/28/08~ Incorporating a wide range of martial art forms, Mepantigan is a traditional fighting style in Bali in which young men and women, clad in sarongs, do battle on local beaches or, more popularly, in rice fields knee-deep in mud.
Despite aggressive body slams and somersaults end in the muck, rules actually do exist. Kicking, punching, leg sweeps, eye-poking, scratching, groin hits, biting ala Mike Tyson, hair pulling, spitting and profanity are all against the rules. A fight is conducted in a 5 x 5 meter arena comprised of two rounds of 5 minute's duration.
Exciting and spirited, a mepantignan match is usually accompanied by a traditional gamelan orchestra.

Faces of Bali - An Exhibition by Suminarto Dengue Cases Among Western Australian Visitors to Bali on the Rise. Some Practical Tips for a Healthy Bali Holiday.
~Up 03/25/08~Bali's Maya Ubud Resort & Spa will feature a solo painting exhibition by Suminarto, "Faces of Bali" from July 15 - August 31, 2008.
Known as a talented painter in the impressionist and realist style, Suminarto has been strongly influenced by the realist work of Dullah, one of the Indonesian master painters and a favorite of Indonesia's first President, Sukarno. Suminarto's work was also influenced by S. Sudjojono, a man who served as the artist's tutor in impressionism.
Born in Solo, Central Java, in 1941, Suminarto studied at the Institute of Art in his home town. First coming to Bali in 1963 seeking inspiration he, like so many artists before him, instantly fell in love with the many charms of the Island. A few years later in 1969 he relocated to Bali and has remained here ever since.
Suminarto will display forty of his works at the Maya Ubud Resort & Spa focusing on Balinese faces and panoramic views of his adopted home in the current exhibition.
Finding inspiration in the unique character and beauty of the faces of the Balinese people, Suminarto confesses a long-held fascination with the facial expressions of the Balinese, their body lines, eyes and subtle movements. The artist believes these physical attributes are a reflection of the religious and cultural activities of the people.
Faces of Bali
Suminarto's beautiful works on canvas, acrylic and pastel that comprise his current exhibition can be viewed at the Maya Ubud Resort & Spa daily from July 15 to August 31, 2008.
For more information contact Ayu Martiasih at telephone ++62(0)-361-977888.
